\nSince\n2014 Tim Burley has been compiling data through personal survey and\nthrough peer to peer counseling with mostly newly transitioned\nVeterans. Almost all were in the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine\nCorps. In almost all cases of Veterans with thoughts of suicide,\ndepression, panic, anxiety, and PTSD, the root cause of the problems\nwere stress related. Most had triggers to mental illness stimulated\nby the transition to civilian status and through physical pain which\nexacerbated their mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nCurrently\nall Military Branches and the Federal Government have what they call\na Transition Program. This transition program has various steps the\nmember of the military must attend or complete, but the program is\nwoefully successful due to importance of mission, understanding of\ncurrent civilian markets and structure, and lack of tools needed to\nprepare the Veteran for civilian life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nIn\na study with now 174 recently separated prior members of the\nmilitary, the Military\u2019s Transition Program rated on a Scale from 1\n(low) to 10 (high) a .07. Many of the respondents got little or no\nassistance or education needed for their transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nThey\nstill use the same resume layout as Vietnam Veterans used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nI\nhad to hurry up and process out, so they signed off on my paperwork\nbecause my commander wanted me on a Field Training Exercise (FTX)\ninstead of out-processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nThey\nhad us apply for two jobs. Neither of the jobs were anything we were\nactually interested in. The companies offered little in salary or\nbenefits. Most wanted an investment by the Veteran almost like a\npyramid scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nThe\nSecond Part of the study asked the Veterans how they would rate the\nCommunities assistance when they rejoined the civilian workforce.\nUsing the same scale, they rated Communities an average of a 1.2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nSome\nof the comments were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nCompanies\ndon\u2019t look at our achievements, they look for physical or mental\nissues and aren\u2019t interested in our service status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nWe\nare expected to start at minimum wage or as general labor because HR\nRepresentatives don\u2019t look at our military skills as the equivalent\nof civilian skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nCommunity\nMembers often Thank us for our service, but aren\u2019t interested in\nhelping. At least it makes them feel good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nThe\nThird and final question, how would you rate your ability to\nsuccessfully integrate back into civilian status, and did you\nprepare. The Veterans rated themselves at a surprising 1.4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nI\ndidn\u2019t have time to prepare, nor did I have any idea what I was\ngoing to do. I just wanted out!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nWe\ndid not save enough nor did we realize and budget for the cost of\ntransition. We didn\u2019t earn that much in the military, we lived pay\ncheck to pay check. We ended up living in our parent\u2019s basement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nNow\nI know why we put guns in our mouth and pull the trigger!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
